How do I transfer a domain name that was registered with GoDaddy.com?

  • Turn off "private registration" if it's enabled
  • Make sure the domain name is unlocked
  • Make sure your e-mail address is correct
  • Know your transfer authorization code
  • Speed up the transfer at GoDaddy
  • If GoDaddy is providing you with free DNS service
If you have problems with any of these steps, you can contact GoDaddy directly at (480) 505-8899.

Turn off "private registration" if it's enabled

GoDaddy offers an optional service they call "private registration" that makes them the owner of a domain name instead of you. GoDaddy will reject the transfer of any domain name that has "private registration" enabled.
If you're not sure whether you have a private registration, view the WHOIS records for your domain name and see if the contact e-mail addresses end with "domainsbyproxy.com". If so, you have a private registration, and you'll need to disable it to transfer your domain name.
To disable a GoDaddy private registration:
  1. Go to the Domains by Proxy Web site.
  2. Click MY ACCOUNT.
  3. Login using your private registration customer number and password (your private registration customer number may be different from your main GoDaddy customer number).
  4. Click My Domains.
  5. Locate your domain name in the list and click the Cancel Your Private Registration checkbox on the right.
  6. Click Continue and follow the rest of the instructions to cancel the private registration.
Make sure the domain name is unlocked
Domain names that are "locked" with GoDaddy can't be transferred. To unlock a GoDaddy domain name:
  1. Go to www.godaddy.com.
  2. Login to the GoDaddy Account Manager using your existing GoDaddy customer number and password.
  3. Click My Account.
  4. Click Domain Manager.
  5. Locate your domain name in the list and click on it.
  6. You may need to click More Settings.
  7. If the domain name is locked, the page may display "Locked: Locked (Change)". Click Change. Or if there is just a big Locking icon at the top of the page, click it.
  8. Clear the check mark from the Lock domains button, then click OK.
It may take up to 24 hours for GoDaddy to notify the central domain registry that the domain name has been unlocked. During this time, you can still place the transfer order on our Web site. We'll start the transfer as soon as the central registry knows it's been unlocked.

Make sure your e-mail address is correct

We'll need to send a transfer approval notice to the "administrative contact" e-mail address that GoDaddy has on file for your domain name. Use GoDaddy's control panel to make sure the e-mail address is correct:
  1. Login to the GoDaddy control panel and view your domain names (see the "unlocking" instructions above for details).
  2. Locate your domain name in the list and click on it.
  3. Locate the "Administrative" contact section and click Edit.
  4. Make sure the administrative contact e-mail address is correct. If it's wrong, update it and click OK.
Do not edit the "Registrant" contact or click the checkbox marked "Copy to all contact types" when editing the "Administrative" contact. If you change the registrant, GoDaddy may reject transfers. Be sure to edit the administrative contact only.

Know your transfer authorization code

After you sign up with us, we'll send the GoDaddy administrative contact a message asking him or her to enter the domain name's "transfer authorization code" on our Web pages. You can get this code from the GoDaddy control panel:
  1. Login to the GoDaddy control panel and view your domain names (see the "unlocking" instructions above for details).
  2. Locate your domain name in the list and click on it.
  3. The page will display "Authorization Code: Send by Email". Click Send by Email.
  4. A new screen appears. Click OK to have GoDaddy "Resend the authorization code e-mail message to the administrative contact for the selected domain".
  5. GoDaddy will send the transfer authorization code to your e-mail address. Please save it until you're asked to enter it on our transfer approval pages.

Speed up the transfer at GoDaddy

After you approve the transfer on our Web pages, we'll tell you that we're waiting for GoDaddy to release the domain name to us. They normally take seven days to do so, but you can optionally speed up the process by doing this:
  1. Log back in to the GoDaddy control panel.
  2. From the "Domains" tab, choose Pending Transfers.
  3. Locate your domain name in the list and click on it.
  4. Click the Accept/Decline icon in the top left of the screen.
  5. Choose Accept, then click OK.
After doing this, the transfer will usually finish within two hours.

If GoDaddy is providing you with free DNS service

If you're signing up for our Web hosting service, and GoDaddy is currently providing you with Web hosting service, the transfer will go smoothly. GoDaddy will not disable their Web hosting and DNS service when you transfer the domain name, allowing a smooth "overlap".
However, there's one rare situation that can lead to problems. If you're signing up for our Web hosting, and you're currently using GoDaddy's DNS service but you are not hosting your Web site or e-mail at GoDaddy, GoDaddy will stop providing the DNS service as soon as you transfer the domain name itself (or even if you update the DNS nameservers there before the domain name transfer). This can cause "downtime" for some visitors during the overlap period.
Unfortunately, there's no way to avoid this. GoDaddy is doing it intentionally: they know that they could still receive requests for your domain name for up to two days (that's how DNS works), but they aren't giving you a way to keep the services running there during that period. Fortunately, this is not a common situation.

Twitter hiring workers to turn Tweets into money

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Twitter, the popular but money-losing microblogging service, is hiring engineers and specialists who can help turn it into a money-maker.
The 2-1/2-year-old Internet start-up, whose short text messages or "tweets" have become a global social phenomenon, is building up a team focused on generating revenue with a new range of yet-to-be launched products, judging by job postings on the company's website.
Among the 26 job openings listed on Twitter's site, four are specifically identified as being devoted to "monetization." Striking licensing deals are key responsibilities for two other jobs.
"Twitter is looking for new members of our technical staff to work on cutting edge monetization projects," several of the postings said.
The move to invest in such projects signals that making money is becoming a bigger priority at Twitter, as it seeks to evolve from being one of the Web's fastest-growing social media firms into a self-sustaining online business.
"The company has crossed into the phase where monetization matters. They're ramping it up," said a source close to Twitter who did not wish to speak on the record about its finances.
A Twitter spokesperson said co-founder Biz Stone was not immediately available for comment. The company has about 120 employees, she said.
Tweets, which are limited to 140 characters, have grown into an established communications medium that has played a key role in world events such as the post-election protests in Iran last summer.
"They know they're here for the long term now, so they need to turn on these monetization engines," said Altimeter Group analyst Jeremiah Owyang.
Twitter, a privately held company, does not report earnings, but its website says: "While our business model is in a research phase, we spend more money than we make."
The company spokesperson did not confirm if that is still accurate.
Twitter struck deals in October -- widely reported to total $25 million -- to license its data feed to Google Inc and Microsoft Corp, allowing allowing tweets to appear within search results on the companies' Internet search engines.
The job postings make it clear that generating revenue beyond the licensing deals is one of the 2010 priorities for Twitter, said Altimeter's Owyang.
Twitter, which recently moved into a larger office space in San Francisco, had 19.4 million unique visitors to its U.S. website in November, according to comScore, up sharply from the 1.5 million visitors a year earlier. Many industry watchers believe the actual number of worldwide Twitter users is much higher, since many people access the service through third-party applications instead of the website.
In September, Twitter raised $100 million in a move that valued the company at $1 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter, from backers including mutual fund giant T. Rowe Price and private equity firm Insight Venture Partners.
Twitter executives have said in the past that the company is interested in offering premium services, such as analytic tools for certain customers, and that it was exploring ways to integrate advertising into the service.
According to the job postings, the company is seeking engineers to build out the infrastructure and front-end features to support monetization systems that include "customer applications and reporting."
A posting for a product marketing manager for monetization said the person would focus on "enhancing business users' understanding of the value of Twitter."

Remove Followers on Twitter That Don't Follow Back

Do you like to follow people on Twitter? I do! I love to see what others are up to with their cyber snippets, but there are a lot of people that don't follow you back, so after a while when your "Following" heavily outweighs your "Followers" you can start to look like a bit of a cyber stalker. What can be done?

I found this neat little script over on userscripts.org which allows you to remove people from your friends list who don't follow you back.

Here's what the author says:
This script highlights the "remove" buttons for "friends" who don't follow you  back on your Twitter Friends pages. A new action button is added at the bottom  of the page. When you click this button, all marked friends will be removed.
The scrip marks only users who:

  • don't follow you (who don't return the love)
  • have their updates unprotected (you can always remove locked users manually if you want).
By default, no action is taken, so you have the chance to inspect which users will  be removed before clicking the Remove Marked (12) button.

To run the script you need to install Greasemonkey for Firefox, then install the script by clicking here. Once Greasemonkey takes to the script head over tohttp://tiwtter.com/friends and view your "Following" list, you will see Greasemonkey at the bottom right of Firefox, it looks like a little smiling monkey, right click on the monkey and choose "Twitter Remove Non-Followers". You won't able to see this unless you are viewing your friends list.

Now all people in your "Following" list who are not following you back will have the remove button highlighted green, simply click the remove button to stop following them, and when you are done hit the Remove Marked button at the bottom. No action is taking until you hit this button.

This is a very handy little script, great for tidying up your Twitter workspace!

All credit goes to Johannes la Poutre over at userscripts.org

Have you used this on Twitter? Let me know what your friend clutter is like with a comment below!
